El río Mondego fue durante décadas la frontera natural que separaba las dos órbitas religiosas, el cristiano y el musulmán.

UNIVERSIDADE VELHA: La Universidade Portuguesa fue fundada en el año 1290. Cabe destacar la Biblioteca Joanina construida en 1717, de estilo barroco, el interior está formado por tres salas comunicadas por arcos.

UNIVERSIDADE NOVA: Alberga distintos museos. Muy cerca se encuentra el jardín botánico.

MONASTERIO DE SANTA CRUZ: Monumento más notable sin lugar a dudas. La Iglesia tiene una sola nave y sus muros están decorados con azulejos del siglo XVIII.
